The MMI, or Multiple Mini Interview, is being increasingly used in the admissions process for medical schools and other professional schools.
The MMI (sometimes referred to as the MMI interview) consists of a series of stations or "mini interviews." This particular interview format was introduced in 2004 by McMaster University in Canada, and is now utilized by multiple medical schools in Canada and the United States.
In 2023, over 30 US medical schools and 13 Canadian medical schools utilized the MMI in their admissions process. The MMI is also used by multiple veterinary schools, dentistry schools, pharmacy schools, and other professional schools.
Why has the MMI become increasingly popular in the admissions process?
It’s widely recognized that the best physicians and healthcare professionals have more than just great grades and scores. The most effective ones display a number of non-academic skills and traits. These skills and traits are difficult to evaluate, which is why admissions teams rely on the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
For example, medical schools want to ensure that their future graduates can communicate with patients, can work in a team, and embody the traits of compassion, empathy, and other important qualities.
In an MMI, students rotate through a series of stations. Each of these stations is designed to assess for a specific quality or skill that the school has deemed important for its future students.
