Why Mentoring Matters For Medical Students

Updated: Nov 3, 2021

What's the best way to find a mentor in medical school? How do you establish a mentor-mentee relationship with a faculty member? How can you make the most of this relationship? These important questions were recently posted in a new thread on the Student Doctor Network discussion forum by an entering medical student.

Several years ago, in an article published on the Student Doctor Network, we wrote about:

  • Importance of mentoring for medical students

  • Ways in which students can search for mentors

  • How mentors can help further your career

  • Problems that can arise in the mentor-mentee relationship

At the time the article was written, research indicated that a small percentage of medical sudents had mentors. Since then, our nation's medical schools have made significant efforts to help students find mentors. The video above was produced by the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and describes one mentoring program.
